The British Open Championship is the only golf open to be held outside the US. The format of the championship is a 72-hole stroke play tournament. There is a cut off after the first 36 holes. This is limited to the top 70 players and those that tie in last place. What is then unique to the British Open is that there is a four-hole playoff match which is contested between all golfers tied at the end of regulation. If there are no clear winners the playoff continues into sudden death.
